Like the rest of the world, Havana and Cuba have just completed the first full year of Covid 19. It has done so with the full force of the U.S. embargo on its neck, including additional measures enacted by the Trump administration and so far not modified or removed by the Biden administration. What has Havana been like the past year? What is it like now? What have been the major challenges and achievements?

CCFA Toronto AGM Via ZOOM At 2pm Est

Invitation to All CCFA Members: Annual General Meeting   2:00 p.m. EST,
16 May, 2021

We live in exceptional and difficult times. Please protect yourself and stay safe.  Covid is spreading rapidly and new lockdown measures are in place. We were unable to hold our annual meeting last fall, and now it is scheduled to be a virtual Zoom meeting.

I am writing to invite you to join us at this meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16th at 2 pm EST. It will be held on the software program called Zoom and you register in advance by going to: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_MRJ2KbaPTxC3HAMig6jCNg. For easier access you can go to our website and click on the link there in Events for May 16th. www.ccfatoronto.ca.

We are delighted that the Cuban Ambassador to Canada, Josefina Vidal, will be able to join us and bring greetings on this occasion.

In addition, we will have a special guest speaker, Shirley Langer, who will talk about the significance today of the very successful Literacy Campaign across Cuba 60 years ago.  Born and raised in Ingersoll, Ontario, Shirley recently returned to Toronto following 25 years on Canada’s west coast.  Shirley lived and worked in Cuba just after the victorious campaign and interviewed many of the young teachers and their students.  Her inspiring book called Anita’s Revolution, brings to vivid life many of their stories. We look forward to Shirley sharing her experiences and insights with us.

We will have a PowerPoint presentation highlighting our activities over the past year or so and a plan to put forward for the coming months. We encourage you to join us and to share your ideas and insights.

This will be a different experience than our previous person to person meetings, but it offers the opportunity for many more members far and near to participate. We look forward to seeing you.

If you need help to navigate Zoom, or to connect by telephone or tablet, please email or call me in advance.

Yours in solidarity, Elizabeth Hill, President, Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association Toronto
