“PLAY is every child’s right”

(The Rights of the Hospitalized Child, Canadian Institute of Child Health, April 1980)

A HUMANITARIAN PROJECT FOR CUBA

Play is essential for a child’s growth and well-being, and laughter promotes healing in both young and old. In fact, it is often said that “laughter is the best medicine.”

El juego es parte esencial para el crecimiento y bienestar del niño, el reir promueve la recuperación en chicos y adultos. A menudo se dice que "la risa es el remedio infalible"

In the last twenty-five years, therapeutic clowns have been visible in health care settings around the world, particularly in children’s hospitals.  Through gentle inclusive play, they bring relief from pain, anxiety, and feelings of isolation and loneliness.

In 1993 a very successful therapeutic clown program was launched at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), Toronto, Canada by Joan Barrington. In 1999 Joan became Co Director of Therapeutic Clowns Canada launching programs coast to coast. She is presently working under Therapeutic Clowns International to take this complementary therapy globally.

In collaboration with Adrienne Hunter, long time Canadian resident in Cuba working in the field of Public Health, Joan has taken initial steps to establish a therapeutic clown program in children’s hospitals and other health care facilities in Cuba.

For this initiative we are in partnership with the Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association Toronto and the charitable organization Mackenzie-Papineau Memorial Fund in support of the health and well being of all Cubans.
